Flagstaff Rock Climbing

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

The guys at Vertical Relief asked for local climbers to send a few pics over as a prelude to the Reel Rock Film Tour that is coming to the Orpheum tomorrow night. Since I took the time to sort out the photos and such, I figured why not share them on the Visual Adventures Blog.  These shots were taken over the past year and all are within a few hours drive of Flagstaff. Locations include:

  • Jacks Canyon
  • Sedona
  • Oak Creek Canyon
  • Cochise Stronghold

evolv Climbing Website Redesign

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

evolv new website designThis is a sneak peak of the latest project: a redesign of evolv’s website. Initially, we were just going to move the site into WordPress using a design that had already been developed, but ultimately we  moved into the role of designing as well.  We are really excited about how the site is shaping up and have enjoyed working with the team at evolv.
(P.S. we really love their climbing shoes as well!)

Additional features include:

Custom PHP coding to make it dynamic and easier to update. With a focus on user experience, our end goal is a beautiful, navigable, website that effectively conveys evolv’s branding and makes for effortless online product research, and purchase. We’ve integrated a WordPress site with a Pinnacle Ecommerce System and a Custom Dealer Locator.

The Company

Evolve Sports & Designs Co. is a U.S. based climbing footwear company dedicated to creating cutting-edge performance climbing shoes and quality high traction footwear. Providing unique, innovative products and services to the climbing community, evolv is the second largest climbing shoe company in the US.

Images from Lake KooCanUSA (Stone Hill)

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

Lisa, Zane and I got a great tour of the climbing at Lake Koocanusa from the Boveng Family (Arne, April and Karl).  As gravity often has it’s way with climbing, we stayed on the wall adjacent to the road.  I especially like the crack routes, which were often characterized by tricky gear placements and sandbagged ratings.

Stone Hill is the name of the quartzite cliffs that rise above Lake Koocanusa near the Canadian Border in Montana.  If you don’t know where the name came from look at the title and it will be pretty clear.  It’s a very pretty setting and although some of the climbs are right next the the highway, they are also right next to your car, saving you from having to carry your gear more than a few feet.

Astro Dog Climbing Topo – Black Canyon, CO

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Black Canyon, ColoradoDue to popular demand, I have uploaded a printable version of an Astro Dog Topo I created a number of years back.  I’ve added some new information, especially regarding the finish. Route finding should be mostly straightforward as you’ll have rappelled over most of the climbing.

Note: rappel beta is for climber’s left or right, not skiers.

The route gets sun until about noon or 2pm depending on what time of year you’re doing it.

Red Rocks Climbing 2010

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

These are some shots I got while out on a photoshoot for Outdoor Research at Red Rocks, NV, outside of Las Vegas.  Lisa and I were both modeling for the shoot, but I decided to bring my camera along.  We had a group of five, plus photographer Bryan Smith, so there was some opportunity for me to get some shots.  It was two long days of shooting followed by two long days of teaching clinics.  Just thinking of all that makes me feel tired and want to order a latte while I type this up.  The best part of it all was spending time with a great group of people.  The team Outdoor Research has put together is a great one, and I really enjoy the time spent with the crew.  I look forward to seeing the shots Bryan got of us.
