NASA EELS Project
Exobiology Extant Life Surveyor or EELS is a robot that is being designed by NASA/JPL to look for life on one of Saturn’s moons, Enceladus. You can read more about the project here: https://www-robotics.jpl.nasa.gov/how-we-do-it/systems/exobiology-extant-life-surveyor-eels/
My role is Director of Photography and involves exploring caves, crevasses, and moulins with the NASA team. I’ve been filming them as they test and build the robot. It is a great combination of my ice climbing and videography skills, to say the least.
The work I did on Mt. St. Helens is part of this project and I’m waiting for more of the content to be released so I can publish it here.
2023 Update:
Our 2023 trip was huge and a huge success. We spent over two weeks on the glacier with about 40 JPL/NASA staff members and a sizeable crew from Direct Action Vertical making sure everybody was safe. Parks Canada, the Athabasca Glacier Center, and the Crossing Resort all took wonderful care of us. Some new records were even broken in terms of robotic achievements.
